Apnea of Prematurity

Apnea of Prematurity

Apnea means breathing slows down or stops. Prematurity is when a baby is born early before they are due. Apnea of prematurity happens when a baby who is born early has times when breathing stops. The pauses in breathing last for at least 15 to 20 seconds. This may happen as early as the first or second day after your baby is born. This is a common problem and can be treated. Apnea of prematurity most often goes away on its own as your baby gets older. Your baby's breathing will be normal and the apnea will not come back. In some cases, you may need to watch your baby's breathing at home. If your baby continues to have breathing pauses, they may be caused by some other illness. Talk with your baby's doctor about them.
